Buchanan's Kampf:Update

Think Progress brings to light some excerpts from Pat "Whitey" Buchanan's newest screed "State of Emergency." MSNBC has video of The Wing-nuttiest on NBC's Today with Dick Gregory(link).

America faces an existential crisis. If we do not get control of our borders, by 2050 Americans of European descent will be a minority in the nation their ancestors created and built. No nation has ever undergone so radical a demographic transformation and survived.(p11)

An existential crisis? I thought that was whether or not you liked "I Heart Huckabees". No matter here it comes, Buchanan peddling the boogeyman of the hour. the Atzlan Reconquista, (when clicking the prior link please make sure your tin-foil hat is firmly in place.):

“Chicano chauvinists and Mexican agents have made clear their intent to take back through demography and culture what their ancestors lost through war.”(p12)

Media Matters enters the fray by supplying these beauties

"We are witnessing how nations perish. We are entered upon the final act of our civilization. The last scene is the deconstruction of the nations. The penultimate scene, now well underway, is the invasion unresisted." [p. 6]

"[W]e are in the midst of a savage culture war in which traditionalist values have been losing ground for two generations." [p. 28]

And less we forget this classic piece of paranoia:

"I think these parts of our country are going to be de facto parts of Mexico even though they're under the jurisdiction of the United States,"

It is true that even paranoid xenophobes have a point, assimiliation should be the ultimate goal for all immigrants. What is in dispute is how does that assimiliation take place. Historically, assimilation has been a process of blending, not always peacefully, the newer culture into the extistent one.

The other path, the Buchanan path seeks to force a non-existent "norm" down everyone's collective throats. In this fairy tale world, who decides the boundaries of the norm, who enforces it and who will watch the watchmen.
